<strong>WHEN:</strong> November 9, 2008
<strong>TIME:</strong> Begins at 4:00 p.m.</font size></center>
<center><font size=+0>Monroe County Opportunity Program’s 18th Annual Walk for Warmth fundraiser, which is the kick-off for Homeless Awareness Week will be held Nov. 9, 2008.
This event is dedicated to raising awareness and dollars to help low-income Monroe County individuals and families who are facing utility related emergencies.
<strong>100% </strong>of the money raised from pledges and donations from the Walk is distributed back into the community.
The Walk begins at 4:00 p.m., at Loranger Square, (Washington & First St.), with a route through downtown Monroe and highlighting historic homes.
Pledge sheets available at 1140 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe.

The essence of the “25 Changes Lives” campaign is to let the community know that everyone can take part in reducing poverty – and to give of your self – whether it be a quarter, $25, or more, it all matters and makes a difference for the people we serve. Reservations for the fundraising breakfast can be made by contacting Tara at 243-1520 until April 24th.
The mission of MCOP is to enhance the quality of life and reduce the effects of poverty by providing opportunities, services, and collaborating with community agencies which foster self-sufficiency. MCOP began in 1965 under the Economic Opportunity Act as a Community Action Agency.

| Weatherization and Energy Assistance |
The Energy Conservation Department offers help to low-income Monroe County residents with:
Utility Assistance
Energy Education
Weatherization Services
The weatherization assistance is a state and federally-funded home energy conservation program providing FREE measures to a home.
Families receiving weatherization services can expect heating costs to be reduced 20-25%, amounting to about $300 savings per year.
Tips, incentives, and energy savings kits are distributed at each energy class to assist in lowering energy expenses.

Vans Equipped with wheelchair lifts, seating for 6-10 passengers
Service is available Monday through Friday (and some Saturdays) from 6am to 4:30pm throughout Southeastern Michigan, as well as Toledo

| Senior Medicare Patrol |
$1 out of every $7 spent on Medicare is paid inappropriately.

Billions of dollars are lost each year to Medicare/Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse. The Medicare and Medicaid programs provide security for you and your family. You want to ensure that these health insurance programs will have the money to operate and to provide good, quality health care for you and future generations.
Although the vast majority of providers are honest, the activites of the remaining few result in wasted funds for the Medicare and Medicaid programs and a loss of quality of care for yourself.

Here are some ways to take an active role in protecting your health care:
*Review your Medicare Summary Notice errors
*Confirm that services/supplies were received and necessary
If you identify or suspect waste, fraud, and/or abuse, call your provider and describe the problem. If you're not satisfied with the response you get or if you are not comforable calling your provider directly, call us at MCOP. 734-241-2775

Volunteers are critical to the success of this effort. Since 1993, billions of dollars in health care savings have been realized due to government and volunteer efforts of people like you.
You can help make a difference in your community by actively participating in your local Senior Medicare Patrol Project.
Volunteer activites include:

*Helping beneficiaries review their Medicare Summary Notices
This information is provided by the U.S. Administration on Aging, which is partnering with other government agencies, the MCOP, and thousands of older Americans in a national effort to combat and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid.

| Home Chore |
The Home Chore Department assists those age 60+ with home maintenance tasks that include:
lawn mowing
cleaning gutter
minor carpentry
shoveling snow
minor electrical and plumbing repairs
installing storm windows and air conditioners
All to improve safety in and outside of their home.

| Home Care |
The Home Care Department assists eligible Monroe County residents with daily routines such as homemaking and personal care tasks so that clients may remain living independently in their own homes. Respite care is also available for care givers.

| Resource Advocacy |
The Resource Advocacy Department links seniors with services and benefits for which they may qualify. Home visits are scheduled to assess the appropriate community involvement including:

Senior Prescription Assistance Program
Senior Fuel and Unmet Emergency Needs Program
Home Injury Control (HIC) including wheelchair ramps, bathroom chair and grab bars, bathtub rails, toilet seat risers and rails, smoke alarms, hand-held showers, safe lighting, and non-skid surfacing.
