Monroe County Historical Museum
Welcome to the Monroe County, Michigan Historical Museums! Our main Museum is located in downtown Monroe in a renovated ca.1911 U.S. Federal Post Office building. Our two floors are filled with displays with maps and images, plus special collections and displays. We house one of the largest Gen. George A. Custer collections, interpreted with artifacts, documents and photographs. Main Museum Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (seasonal). Admission pass for 2012 starts in January: $4 per adult, $2 per child, 5 years and under are FREE. On the second floor is our Commission Archives, where researchers investigate genealogical and historical Monroe County subjects by appointment. Other Monroe County supported museums are: the Navarre-Anderson Trading Post, 3775 North Custer Road; the Martha Barker Country Store museum, 3815 North Custer Road; the Monroe County Vietnam Veterans Historical Museum at Norman Heck Park, and the Eby Log cabin at the Monroe County Fairgrounds PLEASE NOTE: Due to economics and staffing Museum events may be subject to change- call the main Museum for the latest hours and schedule! Look for cuts in 2012- we will be open for 7 months (so far).

| Native American Hand Drum Workshop |
Saturday, February 25th at the Museum. Led by Panoka Walker, you can have the unique experience of creating your own Native American hand drum. Learn about the importance of the drum, and make your own. Fees; bring a sack lunch.,

| Custer Civil War Guidon |
Now on display is the remains of a Civil War guidon (small pennant flag) used by Gen. George A. Custer during the war. Once complete in the swallowtail design, it still has it's "3" Division markings on the fabric. See it now as part of the Civil War exhibit & Custer items! Limited time in 2012- see it now.

Wednesdays 10-2:00ish: the local genealogical Society has their own volunteer archives open, second floor. Closed from 12-1:00 p.m. for lunch.
Civil War Exhibit continuing for the Sesquicentennial.

1st: Historical Commission meeting, 7:00 p.m. Back entrance of museum.
18th: Program on the Civil War and the Underground Railroad by Jeff O'Den, 1:00 p.m.

Join the Friends of the Museum group now forming to provide museum support, public programs, meetings, events. They meet monthly at the museum- usually on the third Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Contact Chris Kull at 734 240 7787 for details. We need YOUR support to help organize the effort to keep us open.

Due to the retirement of the museum curator, and non-replacement of this position, Archivist Chris Kull is taking on curatorial duties. The Historical Commission has voted on the reduction of open hours- please note Archives hours are now BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Call the Archives 734 240 7787 to schedule your appointment for Wednesday through Saturday. Thank you for your understanding as we continue with less staff and more demand.
