Soroptimist is a volunteer service organization for business and professional women in Monroe County. If you are interested in working with others to improve the lives of others, this is the organization for you.

Soroptimist was formed because in 1921 women who were interested in volunteer service were not permitted to join male service organizations. Since that time, Soroptimist has worked to help women improve their standing in the world.

Who We Partner With:
 The Salvation Army by sending girls to summer camp and ringing the bells at Christmas time.
 Habitat For Humanity by serving lunch to the Habitat home builders each June.
Family Counseling & Shelter by providing "showers" for paper products, personal items, goods, and products for the women and children of domestic violence.
Gwen's Garden Gate by providing supplies for teenage girls in foster care 


Mission Statement
Soroptimist International of Americas focus is to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.

Club Meeting -Meals
Thank you to members who pre-paid for your meals. If you did not pre- pay, you will be responsible for bringing your own lunch/dinner to the meetings. Catering will be by Village Bistro.

2008 Celebration of Women
The three 2008 Helen Applin Award recipients are: Barbara Drodt, Sandra Kreps and Charity Riddle.

Scholarships have helped many women in our community to continue their education and become positive role models in our community. The winners will be honored during the Celebration of Women Dinner. They are: Jessica M. Jump – Violet Richardson Award; Debbra K. Maiden – Women’s Opportunity Award; Karen Reed – Virginia Wagner Educational Award and Paula Whitman – Making A Difference for Women Award.

The featured speaker will be Mary Kramer, Vice President of Crain Communications, Inc. Mary has 16 years of reporting and management experience at daily newspapers before joining Crain's Detroit Business in April 1989.

Scholarships
The Violet Richardson Award honors a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 for her commitment to making the world a better place through her volunteer activity. The winner may choose to donate a portion of her $500 award to a charity of her choice. DEADLINE: December 1.
The Women's Opportunity Award ($500) will honor a woman who is the head of her household and in need of further skills and training to enter the work world or upgrade employment status. DEADLINE: December 1.
The Virginia Wagner Award ($500) will honor a woman pursuing a bachelors, masters, or doctorate degree in her chosen field. Emphasis is put on scholarship and effort toward education. DEADLINE: January 15
The Making A Difference For Women Award honors women who are making extraordinary differences in the lives of other women using personal and/or professional means. The recipient should be a women who inspires and encourages other women and who has had a significant impact on the lives of women and girls. $300 award to the winner's charitable organization of her choice. DEADLINE: December 1

Applications for the Making a Difference for Woman Award can be obtained by calling Christina Hills at (734) 242-2220.
